Microsoft borrows Santorini name
Microsoft has honored the idyllic Greek island "Santorini" by naming its lightweight operation system, which is currently under development.
According to industry insiders, the new operating system is also called “Windows Lite” and is set to compete with Chrome.
Based on a report from Zac Bowden of Windows Central, the Microsoft project has a new codename, and it’s now internally called Santorini.
There was also a Microsoft Garage project dubbed “Project Santorini,” which reportedly was “a unique photo experience emphasizing the power of nostalgia.”
Bowden revealed that Santorini is a type of “Windows Core” operation system that will come in various forms. For example, the “Surface Hub 2X,” which industry insiders got to play with at the recent “Ignite” conference, was another form of the system.
The Ignite Conference is an annual event for technology professionals sponsored by Microsoft.
Bowden adds that another system form will be the next HoloLens, unveiled at the “Mobile World Congress” on Sunday.
