About Syros
Siros was also called “Lady of Cyclades” and “Nymph of Aegean Sea” and was the home place of Pythagoras’ teacher Ferekidis. During the Neolithic period Siros was one of the most important islands of Cycladic civilization. In the 13th century it was occupied by the Venetians. The establishment and life of the medieval city, which was built on a hill above the port, left their marks to the island until now. Many runaways from other islands came to Siros during Ottoman occupation. In the end of the 19th century the island had an unprecedented development and was full of shipyards, commercial centers and factories. Having Ermoupoli as its center it became one of the most cosmopolitan places in Aegean Sea. The island extends over a surface of 84 km2, its coastline is 87 km long and it has 19,800 inhabitants.

The most ancient traces of habitation belong to the end of the Neolithic Age, between 4000 and 3000 B.C. During the period of prosperity of Cycladic civilization (3200-2000 B.C.) the famous civilization of Syros-Keros developed. In the 13th century the island was taken over by the Venetians who founded the medieval city on a hill above the port. During Turkish rule it kept important privileges and during the Revolution of 1821 it was under French protection. At the end of the 19th century, the island with Ermopolis as its center, experienced unprecedented growth which formed the present day profile of the island.
